V&A's Naomi Campbell Exhibition

Naomi: In Fashion showcases the supermodel's legendary life and career

"NAOMI: In Fashion" delves into the unparalleled 40-year career of fashion model and cultural icon Naomi Campbell. Discovered in Covent Garden at just 15, Campbell rapidly ascended in the fashion industry, making history at 18 as the first Black model on the cover of Paris Vogue in August 1988.

This exhibition, created in collaboration with Campbell and highlighting her voice and perspective, is the first to celebrate the skill and contributions of an individual model to the fashion world. It features an extensive selection from Campbell's personal wardrobe, showcasing haute couture and ready-to-wear ensembles from pivotal moments in her career, along with items borrowed from designer archives and the V&A's collections. Interwoven throughout is Campbell's activism; she has championed equity from a young age, co-founding the Black Girls Coalition in 1989 and leading the 2007 'A Black Issue' of Vogue Italia, advocating for diversity on the runway.

"NAOMI: In Fashion" is structured to guide fans through Naomi Campbell's extraordinary life and career. It begins with her early years and discovery at 15 in Covent Garden, showcasing early photos and modelling portfolios. The exhibition then highlights her rapid rise to fame, including her groundbreaking Paris Vogue cover at 18 and iconic runway moments with video installations of her most memorable catwalks. A section dedicated to her collaborations with legendary designers like Versace and Alexander McQueen features garments, sketches, and behind-the-scenes photos.

Campbell's cultural impact and activism are explored, focusing on her advocacy for diversity, her involvement with the Black Girls Coalition, and her work on Vogue Italia's 'A Black Issue.' Red carpet and editorial highlights display stunning gowns and outfits from major events, while a closer look at her personal wardrobe reveals her unique style.

The final section reflects on her legacy, with testimonials from industry professionals and multimedia installations celebrating her influence on future generations. Throughout, interactive displays and multimedia presentations provide deeper insights into Campbell's life, thoughts on the industry, and her ongoing contributions to fashion and society.
